BLOG: Nearly 120K customers remain without power several hours after rain, wind batter Houston area

HOUSTON – A round of severe thunderstorms is moving through the Houston area Wednesday as an upper-level disturbance moves through the region.

As of 10:46 p.m., 119,382 customers of CenterPoint Energy remain without power after severe weather downed trees and powerlines Wednesday evening.

“Customers don’t need to call to report a power outage,” CenterPoint officials wrote in a statement to KPRC 2. “Our technology lets us know where there are outages.”

The company did ask customers to be safe if they saw a downed power line or pole on fire. They asked people to stay at least 10 feet away and call 713-207-2222.

10:32 p.m. -- Carports in Pasadena crumple under wind, hail and rain

7:17 p.m. -- Nearly 230K remain without power after severe thunderstorms batter Houston area

As of 7:17 p.m., CenterPoint Energy reports that 223,435 customers remain without power, hours after severe thunderstorms moved through the area.

On Twitter, the company said the damage from the storms had “significantly impacted” its electric service area. The company also said it disabled the estimated retore times for outages in different areas.

7 p.m. -- Crews work to clear tree that fell on powerline in Katy

5:40 p.m. Tree down on Smith Street in downtown

5:30 p.m. -- System could be offshore by 7 p.m.

The number of customers without power has swelled to 295,925, as of 5:17 p.m., according to the CenterPoint Energy Outage map. You can track outages here.

As of 4:55 p.m., CenterPoint Energy is reporting that 182,519 customers are without power. CenterPoint says the most customers are affected in the Greenspoint and Northern service areas. Earlier, there were multiple reports of power lines down in the Katy area. If you see a downed powerline, you’re asked to steer clear and be safe. You can check the CenterPoint Outage map here.

4:37 p.m. -- All of Houston area under a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30 p.m.

It appears a truck trailer was knocked over on Eastfield Drive in Webster, according to a tweet by a National Weather Service meteorologist in Houston.

According to the tweet, the trailer was not attached to a truck when it got knocked over.

4:28 p.m. -- Reports of multiple power lines down in Katy

Reports are coming in that there are reports of multiple power lines down in the Katy area, specifically in the area of Danover Street and I-10, Meadowlark and Katy Fort Bend Road. As a result of the downed powerlines, there are also reports of outages.

4:15 p.m. -- Reports of trees down in The Woodlands area

The National Weather Service said there are reports of downed trees in The Woodlands area, about two miles south of Oak Ridge North.
