‘Far Cry 6’ PlayStation Leak Reveals It’s Chosen The Best Villain Possible

Well, we’d recently heard that Giancarlo Esposito was attached to a big upcoming video game, and as of this morning, we know exactly what that is.

The Breaking Bad actor will be our next major villain in Far Cry 6, which has just leaked on the PlayStation store in Hong Kong this morning. This time, we’re heading to a fictional Latin American country, Yara, and Esposito plays Anton Castillo, a ruthless dictator with a son that seems destined to follow in his footsteps. We are Dani Rojas, a Guerrilla fighter trying to liberate the country.

It goes without saying that Ubisoft has landed a villainous whale in the form of Giancarlo Esposito. You know him best from his role as Gus Fring on both Breaking Bad and now Better Call Saul, but he’s also Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian and hell, he’s even voicing Lex Luthor in the (excellent) Harley Quinn animated series. He’s a man of many talents, even if he’s a bit typecast as the calm, menacing bad guy in charge at this point.

Fans of both Far Cry and Breaking Bad will realize that this is now the second major actor to make the leap between the worlds. In addition to Esposito, Far Cry 3’s famed villain, Vaas, was played by Michael Mando, who is a major character in Better Call Saul alongside Esposito’s Fring. So that’s kind of cool.

The rest of the leak makes Far Cry 6….sound like your usual Far Cry game. Fight against a dictator with a rag-tag group, and probably kill them by the end, barring any huge plot turns. Far Cry has generally had its voice actors model for the characters, so yes, Anton Castillo does look exactly like Giancarlo Esposito, according to the leaked lead image art from the PlayStation store.

One thing that caught my attention is the name “Dani Rojas,” which strikes me as a character that could either be male or female, short for either Daniel or Danielle. It makes me wonder if A) Ubisoft has chosen a female lead for Far Cry 6 or B) if they might be doing something Assassin’s Creed-like, where players get to choose a male or female version of the character themselves, like they’re doing with Eivor in Valhalla. We’ve seen custom characters as leads recently in Far Cry 5 and New Dawn, so this could be a spin on that. The look and gender of the protagonist in Far Cry matters less than in most games as you rarely actually see what they look like in the FPS, but it still has me curious how Ubisoft is handling things this time around. My bet is on the ability to pick your gender, based on that neutral-sounding name. Though that could come with double the voicework, so we’ll see.

Anyway, I am always up for a good Far Cry game, and this sounds like a solid start, especially with Esposito on board. The leak also gives us a release date, February 18, 2021, meaning this is not a next-launch title, but interestingly, the PS4 listing says that you can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, if that’s not the one you’re getting in the first place. Ubisoft is having a showcase this Sunday where we will almost certainly see more from the game outside of this store leak.

Update: Ubisoft is just smartly leaning into the leak with a new teaser trailer promising more on Sunday:
