The Dallas Stars hit the road for the first time during their 2024 Stanley Cup playoff run ... and they surely would rather not have their backs already against the wall.

The Stars have dropped the first two games of their first-round playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights — both of those in Dallas. Now they head to Vegas looking to claw back into the series and avoid the dreaded 0-3 deficit.

Wyatt Johnston finishes what he started, scoring on a sharp angle over Vegas goaltender Logan Thompson with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first overtime period. It was Johnston’s second goal of game after staking Dallas to a 1-0 lead to start things off. The Stars are now back in the series, trailing 2-1, and are guaranteed at least a return trip to Dallas for a Game 5 on Wednesday night. But first, Game 4 is at 8:30 p.m. Monday. Read our five immediate thoughts about the Stars’ big victory here.

The third period was scoreless, but by no means was it boring.

The teams paired up for 20 minutes of high-stress hockey and now head to overtime where the next goal wins. If Vegas scores, they’ll take a commanding 3-0 series lead. If Dallas scores, they’re right back in it at 2-1.

Third period (13:00 remaining): The teams remain tied at two during a hotly-contested third period. Logan Thompson continues to stand on his head in goal for the Golden Knights.

The score is tied but it’s hard to feel confident if you’re a Stars fan who watched Dallas cough up a two-goal lead in a flash.

A crucial third period is on the way.

Second period (6:50 remaining): The breathing room is gone.

Vegas strikes again and in a span of three minutes has tied the score. What felt like a dominant performance by Dallas through the first half of the game has turned on its head.

Second period (9:15 remaining): The Knights have arrived.

Vegas gets on the board and gives the home crowd some life with a goal to cut Dallas’ lead to 2-1.

The Stars have their biggest lead of the series at 2-0 after Miro Heiskanen strikes on a Dallas fast break. Evgenii Dadonov and Tyler Seguin with some swift and sweet passing to set up the score.

Second period (18:37 remaining): Game 3 under a delay as linesperson Devin Berg took a puck to the chin and required attention from the Vegas training staff. He was a bit bloodied but returned to the 1-0 game after a short visit with the trainer and some ice cleanup.

It was a dominant first period for the Stars, the most complete 20 minutes they’ve played thus far in the series. In fact, they may even have gone to the locker room for first intermission a bit disappointed they only struck once and were unable to get Vegas back on its heels to start this pivotal Game 3.

1st period (2:50 remaining): The Stars couldn’t capitalize on the first power play of the game, but they continue to heavily outshoot Vegas through the first period. Shots are 18-6.

After heavily outshooting Vegas to start the game Wyatt Johnston finally puts Dallas on the board by stuffing a rebound home for a 1-0 lead.

1st period (9:56 remaining): Still knotted at zero thanks to Vegas goalie Logan Thompson. He makes a brilliant save on Thomas Harley to keep the game scoreless.

1st period (14:30 remaining): No scoring yet but shots-on-goal are 5-1 for the Stars through the first five minutes of action in Game 3.

Jason Robertson rang a shot off Vegas goalie Logan Thompson’s mask to start the game.
