Barca entered the second leg of a Copa del Rey semifinal trailing Sevilla 2-0 but scored three times to capture a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph on aggregate. The club can hope that result, which came in the midst of a far-reaching off-field controversy, can propel it toward a strong finish in La Liga.
Entering the weekend, Barcelona sits tied for second place in the league with 53 points, five behind the leader, Atletico Madrid. Atletico has played one fewer match than Barca, leaving Ronald Koeman’s club with little room for error.
Barca must beat Osasuna, La Liga’s 12th-place team, to keep pace.
Earlier this week, former FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu was among four people linked to the team arrested in connection with financial crimes. Members will elect a new president Sunday, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Barcelona.
Still, the players on the field pushed forward to shock Sevilla and aim to continue ascending against Osasuna.
While much of the focus outside of the team is fixed on the future of 33-year-old star Lionel Messi, Barcelona saw three supporting players score against Sevilla: Ousmane Dembélé, Gerard Piqué and Martin Braithwaite.
