(CNN) – Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has experienced a series of health issues in recent years, including an abnormality that he said was caused by a worm that entered his brain and then died.

That’s according to a report Wednesday from the New York Times.

The 70-year-old said that back in 2010, he experienced severe memory loss and mental fog.

After viewing a scan of his brain, he said a doctor told him his health issues could be caused by a worm that got into his brain, ate a portion of it, then died.

Kennedy told the paper that the parasite did not require treatment and that he has since recovered from the memory loss and brain fog.

A spokesperson for Kennedy’s campaign said he believes he contracted the parasite during his travels to Africa, South America, and Asia.

The spokesperson added that Kennedy is now in “robust physical and mental health.”

Kennedy has worked to portray himself as vibrant and youthful on the campaign trail, compared to President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump, showing himself engaging in strenuous activities like skiing and weightlifting.
