Spider-Man 3 set to bring back Tobey Macguire and Andrew Garfield – and there could be a big bisexual twist
Spider-Man 3 will reportedly star Tom Holland, Tobey Macguire and Andrew Garfield re-enacting the “Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man” meme – only with a bisexual twist.
According to Fandomwire, Macguire and Garfield have both signed on to reprise the Marvel superhero alongside the current, aggressively twinky Peter Parker, Holland.
A Sony source “closely involved” in Spider-Man 3 is said to have told the outlet that Macguire and Garfield’s Spider-Mans will arrive in the film’s final act, bringing the Spider-Verse to the Marvel Comics Universe for the first time.
This latest leak follows reports earlier this year that bosses wanted to bring Garfield’s Spider-Man back and give him a boyfriend.
Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield want one thing: A queer Spider-Man.
It was reported in February that Sony wanted Garfield to portray a bisexual Spider-Man, years after the actor campaigned for producers to make the character pansexual.
“I’m excited to get to the point where we don’t have to have this conversation,” Garfield said in 2015, “where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man.”
“The richness of the world we’re in, the diversity of the world we’re in; you look at the animal kingdom and you see it reflected,” he told Mic.
“You look all over,” he continued. “What are we so scared of? Why are we so, ‘No, it has to be this way, a man and a woman.’ Why is that even a conversation?”
The calls were amplified years later by the current Spider-Man, Holland, who similarly said that Marvel superheroes needn’t always be “a straight white guy“.
When asked is Spider-Man could ever be gay, he shrugged: “Yeah, of course.”
When asked how soon, he said that the future of the character isn’t his to decide.
“But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years,” he elaborated.
