Myanmar Coup: Tear Gas Deployed in Yangon Protest As Death Toll Rises

As demonstrators returned to the streets to protest Myanmar's military coup, tear gas appeared to be deployed in Yangon on Wednesday. At least 20 people have been killed since last month's coup triggered protests nationwide. Thick white smoke could be seen rising as protesters, many wearing construction helmets and carrying makeshift shields, retreated. Despite authorities' increasingly brutal crackdown, demonstrators have continued to flood the streets and are beginning to more rigorously resist attempts to disperse them. Some fear the junta's escalating use of force is meant to provoke a violent backlash by the protesters, in order to discredit them and justify an even harsher crackdown.
